Equal Rights in the Workplace

An employer may not discriminate employees or job seekers on the basis of:

  • sex/gender

  • skin colour

  • religion or faith

  • political views and opinions

  • sexual orientation

  • age

  • disability

  • nationality

  • social background

  • ethnicity

Get in touch with your trade union if you believe you are being discriminated against.

Ethnic and Religious Equal Rights

Employers may not discriminate against employees on grounds of religion or ethnicity. However, dress codes for work – for safety and hygiene reasons, or in the form of workplace uniforms – are acceptable.

Equality of the sexes

Employers must ensure equal treatment of men and women. If you are discriminated against, your trade union can help you with your case. If your trade union refuses to assist you, or you don't hold membership of a trade union, you can contact the Gender Equality Board (Ligestillingsnævnet).

Filing a Complaint

Your trade union processes complaints regarding discrimination or equal rights violations in the workplace. Alternatively, the courts, the Gender Equality Board, or the Danish Institute for Human Rights may process discrimination complaints. These may be complaints over:

  • differences in salary

  • dismissal based on gender

  • advertising for a person of specific gender or ethnicity in a job posting

  • differential treatment on religious or ethnic grounds
